Integrity and corruption-risk seminar with Mark Pyman

web2_IMG_9360“Focus on solutions, metrics and motivation”. These were the words of Mark Pyman, Programme Director for Transparency International´s Defence and Security Programme (TI-DSP), who addressed an audience at CIDS on 27 May.

In his talk “Integrity and the risk of corruption in the public sector, Mr. Pyman, who has been leading TI´s global efforts on corruption prevention in the security and defence sphere, shared 10 lessons-learned that are of relevance to all public sectors in Norway and Europe. He underlined that the focus should be kept on remedial measures and solutions rather than just discussing corruption as a problem. A good first step is to “do a small piece of research that identifies the nature and scale of the corruption issue and, if possible, put it in a comparative context”, he said. Mr. Pyman also referred to TI’s two biggest comparison tools, the Defence Companies Anti-Corruption Index and the Government Defence Anti-Corruption Index, which compare companies´ and countries´ anti-corruption measures. The seminar, which gathered representatives from different public sectors and from the defence industry, also saw Mr. Pyman respond to a number of questions and offer advice to participants on how to introduce and enhance anti-corruption initiatives within their respective organisations. Bård B. Knudsen, Director of CIDS, used the occasion to thank Mr. Pyman for his instrumental role in establishing a fruitful partnership between CIDS and TI-DSP and for his significant contribution to anti-corruption efforts in the defence and security sector.
